SPORTS ENDURANCE / RECOVERY

Strenuous exercise dramatically increases cellular metabolism and, consequently, is a major initiator of oxidative stress.  The merits of GliSODin® in enhancing recovery from strenuous exercise were first indicated in unpublished studies done in Japan with animals and human cyclists.

These results were more thoroughly documented by a separate study of strenuous cycling and treadmill exercise with human volunteers conducted by the Korean Cancer Center Hospital. The study results were presented as a poster at the convention of the American Academy of Clinical Chemistry in July 2004.

The level of lactate in the blood plasma, as well as the “total antioxidant status” of the blood serum, was chosen as indicators of the test subjects’ response to oxidative stress. These studies showed that GliSODin® use resulted in reduction of lactic acid build-up after strenuous exercise.

Rhodiola rosea intake can improve endurance during exercise, according to a recently published double-blind, placebo controlled human study performed in Belgium. The report concluded that Rhodiola rosea intake can improve endurance exercise capacity— producing statistically significant overall performance improvement and lower lactate levels after exercise.  The researchers specifically used a Rhodiola rosea extract with the same Rosavins: salidroside ratio as in the original Russian Pharmacopoeia.  PL Thomas supplies this same quality extract.

These findings support previous animal research which showed that R. rosea extract increases the synthesis or re-synthesis of ATP in mitochondria, and stimulates energetic recovery processes after intensive muscular work.*

ANTI-AGING - by Carl Germano, R.D., C.N.S., L.D.N.

In the mid-1950s, the proposed ‘free radical theory of aging’ postulated that the accumulation of damage caused by free radicals was the underlying mechanism by which organisms age. Oxidative stress is the harmful condition that occurs when there is an excess of free radicals, a decrease in antioxidant levels, or both.  Strategies aimed at limiting and repairing the damage attributed to oxidative stress may slow the advance of numerous age-related diseases. Today, there are many genes that have been identified in certain insects, which, when manipulated, lead to an increase in lifespan in insects. Of those tested, all provide an increased resistance to oxidative stress as a means of modifying lifespan.  In addition, the lifespan can also be extended by the administration of synthetic superoxide dismutase (SOD) as it also appears to provide resistance to oxidative damage.  An interesting study in insects demonstrated that when SOD-producing genes were inserted into cells of fruit flies it caused them to produce even more SOD, resulting in a 40% extension of life.   In a human study, findings suggested that increased SOD activity in certain populations resulted in better protective mechanisms against aging effects.  Research with GliSODin® clearly demonstrates that it can protect the cell from genetic damage caused by oxidative stress while boosting total cellular defense – all critical in diminishing the aging effect in cells.  GliSODin® is the first vegetarian SOD that has been shown to be orally bioactive.*

URINARY TRACT HEALTH

Centuries before the arrival of the Pilgrims, Native Americans realized the medicinal benefits of cranberries and used them for kidney stones and to remove toxins from the blood.

Urinary Tract Health has been one of the widely recognized health benefits of cranberries and cranberry powders such as

Decas Botanical Synergies’ NutriCran Bio-100™. For years it was believed that the low pH of the cranberry acidified the urinary tract and killed the harmful E. coli bacteria that lead to urinary tract infections.

Recent studies have discovered the cranberry’s true mechanism of action for promoting urinary tract health are phytochemicals called Proanthocyanidins (PACs). NutriCran Bio-100™. is a rich source of PACs. PACs fight urinary tract infections by inhibiting E. coli’s ability to adhere to cell walls with their hair-like fimbriae. This inability to adhere to cell walls forces the bacteria to be flushed out of the urinary tract helping to promote a healthy urinary tract.*

FOOD ORIGIN INGREDIENTS

Nutritionists continue to encourage us to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet.  As a result, many companies are focusing on ingredients that are derived directly from traditional foods for their nutritional formulations.  PLT has developed a significant line of Food Origin Ingredients for nutritional applications from a variety of suppliers.  These include a full complement of Fruit Extracts including:  Cranberry, Apple, APPOL™, Bilberry, Blueberry Leaf, Black Currant, Grapefruit, Pomegranate, Prune (Plum), White Cherry, and various Grape extracts including seed, pumice and leaf.

Other Food Origin Ingredients from PL Thomas include extracts from:  Salad, Onion, Curcumin, Rosemary, and Perilla.  These products can be used in a variety of formulations to provide supplemental servings of traditional foods.*

CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH

MegaNatural® Gold from Polyphenolics has been shown to significantly decrease plasma cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.  A proposed mechanism of action indicates that the procyanidins inhibit the synthesis of endothelin-1, the hormone known to be involved in the development of atherosclerosis.  Incorporating grape seed extract as part of a nutritional product helps achieve the goal of a heart-healthy diet.

OmegaCran™ oil is derived from cranberry seeds that are rich in tocotrienols and linoleic acid. OmegaCran™ oil offers many of the benefits from omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids but does not have the odor or taste of fish oil. OmegaCran oil is manufactured by Decas Botanical Synergies.*
