Phospholipids have a general very important
biological function - they constitute the basis of all
biological cells membrane. As a matter of fact, most
physiological activities take place on or through the biological
membrane where the phospholipids provide a fluid matrix, like a
lubricant, which regulates their efficiency. In the last decade
it has become apparent that beside this general property, each
member of the phospholipids family has a specific function.
The most striking member in the phospholipid
family is phosphatidylserine (PS), which is a functional
constituent of brain membranes. PS is mostly found in brain
cells and is involved in numerous functions of neuronal
activity. In recent years, a great deal of the phospholipids
research has emphasized the importance of PS in brain functions
– the memory and learning qualities.
Phosphatidylserine (PS), which is produced from
soy lecithin is being sold worldwide as a nutrient in capsules
or tablets form since 1992. The efficacy of phosphatidylserine
(PS) has been recognized by the USA FDA, which allows a
qualified health claim (May 13, 2003) as follows:
• “Consumption of phosphatidylserine may reduce
the risk of dementia in the elderly...”.
• “Consumption of phosphatidylserine may reduce
the risk of cognitive dysfunction in the elderly…”.
Further, since June 3, 2005 LIPOGEN LTD. is the
first and only company to receive GRAS status for its exclusive
non-bacterial and safe (food grade) soy lecithin
phosphatidylserine (PS) complex. LIPOGEN is currently promoting
the inclusion of its phosphatidylserine (PS) complex in novel
